2002 – 2012: We are 10 this week!

Ten years ago this week we were busy preparing our stand for our first ever trade show - 'Expotile' at the NEC – where we launched our first collection of handmade glass tiles. We had intended just to dip a toe in the water and see what the reaction was to our designs, but the response was amazing and we received our first orders then and there at the show from tile retailers – some of whom are still loyal customers after ten years. Since then we have developed our product range and now concentrate more on larger scale work such as splashbacks and architectural panels, but we'll never forget how we got started and those who helped and encouraged us.

We have some exciting plans to celebrate our ten years in business – more details soon!

A new member of our team

We are delighted to have Helen Scarrett joining our small team this month. A very warm welcome, Helen.

The revolution starts here!

We have been designing handmade glass splashbacks and developing the wow factor in people’s kitchens now for seven years or more. We have been aware for sometime that our splashbacks once installed will turn a good kitchen into a great kitchen and as our art work has progressed our splashbacks have become the focal point not just in the kitchen but of the home.

So now is the time to exploit this space to its true potential. Splashbacks no longer need be a flat surface - lets utilise the space to create a still functional yet three dimensional undulating art form ,whether it be made from one sheet or many different shapes which come together as one finished piece! The area behind the hob or Aga and even behind your humble sink can be used now for expressing yourself like no other space in the house can, taking kitchen design further into the 21st century. Viva la revolution.

Further images can be seen in our image gallery.

Glass Fusing Workshops on the Beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast

May 2011 is Craft and Design Month – a national celebration and promotion of crafts across the UK.

More Awards Success for Steve

We have just heard that one of Steve's latest designs has been shortlisted for a national award! His new Pebble range
( see news item below) has reached the finals for The Tile Association's 'Wall Tile of the Year' award for 2011. This follows our previous successes in these prestigious awards - Steve won the 'Best New Innovation' category in 2003 and 2005, and then was a finalist for in 2009 for Wall Tile of the Year.

Sneak Preview of New 'Pebble' Design

Inspired by the coastal location of our studio, Steve has created a new collection to add to our successful ranges of unique handmade glass tiles and splashbacks. The Pebble collection features soft, rounded pebble forms in subtle tones, perfect for the current trend towards gentle organic shapes and textures. The Pebble design will be available in a number of different colourways, making it easy for you to select one to complement your interior colour scheme, and as with all our splashbacks Pebble will be made-to-measure and therefore available in any size to fit your kitchen or bathroom perfectly.

Here is a preview of two of the colourways; the full range will be launched shortly so check back again soon ...

Two days in two minutes

As promised here is the stop motion video of Steve making one of four architectural glass panels for Croesgoch School. The sea creatures, designed by the school's pupils, have been magically brought to life by the Steve Robinson glass studio.

The panel took two full days to make, we have squeezed it all into two minutes .

We hope you enjoy the show.

Images of the finished panels can be seen below.

Handmade underwater panels come to life

Monday was a good day- we fitted the final panels of Steve’s commission with a local school, Ysgol Croesgoch.

Back in October Steve mentioned the project in his musings, and we showed some images of one of the panels being made for his son’s school. A selected number of sea creatures, designed by the children, have been magically bought to life in an underwater scene to form an internal window between the newly refurbished entrance hall and library. It has been quite a challenge, with the whole team helping out.

Each panel measures just over two metres in height by nearly a metre in width, the largest Steve has ever made so it was nerve-wracking stuff!

Steve made stencils and several test pieces to match the childrens’ designs as closely as possible.

With each of the four panels taking at least two days to make, the colours were painstakingly applied, and then the glass fired in the kiln.

The panels were then taken away to be laminated for safety, before being installed to form a truly unique asset to the school. Here are a couple of pictures that we took. We will have some further photos coming to the website soon, but these are a taster.

If you have a similar project in mind, we would love to hear from you on 01437 721357, or via Email - You do not need any children to design it for you, but it has been fun!

We also took the opportunity to make a stop motion film whilst making one of these panels. Two days (16 hours) condensed into two minutes, it is an interesting insight into how all of our kiln fused glass panels, splashbacks and wall hangings are made. CLICK HERE to see it on You Tube.

The Cheese + Pickles Studio, St Davids

We recently received this wonderful image from our good friend Deborah Withey, the award winning designer and print maker, from The Cheese + Pickles Studio, just around the corner from us here in St Davids, Pembrokeshire. Deb has made wonderful use of no less than 13 different Steve Robinson glass tiles designs in her beautiful home. You can spot them inset into the steps leading to her sun room, which overlooks the stunning St Davids Cathedral.

Thank you Deb!

A chance to join the Steve Robinson team!

There’s always so much to do here at Steve Robinson Glass, so we’ve decided to take someone on to help us. This will bring our little team up to four. It’s a brand new role but as we’re not big on job titles, the best description we can come up with is ‘Sales, Marketing and Customer Service Coordinator’. Previous experience in the glass sector is not important because this job is all about being a great communicator with an outgoing personality - after all, you’ll be helping some very important people - our customers!

If this sounds like the perfect job for you and you’d like to find out more, please email me (Hannah) for an application pack, which contains a full job description, a person specification and details of how to apply. Closing date for return of applications is Friday, 23rd July 2010.

Steve Robinson arrives in John Lewis

It has to be said, we’re all feeling very excited about the latest development at Steve Robinson Glass. A few months ago Steve was offrered the incredible opportunity to design a unique range of glass splashbacks for our favourite store - John Lewis.

Following lots of hard work on both sides, the range of six special designs are now being launched in John Lewis branches across the UK. These designs will be available exclusively to John Lewis customers, who can also choose from most of our stock designs too. Displays are already in place in Cardiff and Bristol (Cribbs Causeway) branches - and many more will be following over the weeks to come.

Rupert Scott announces retirement

Many of you will have arrived at this website via our sister website rupertscott.com. Rupert Scott has been the trading name for all our glass splashbacks and glass tiles since we started out in business in 2002. We can’t quite remember why we chose the name but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Well, Steve & I have decided that with the growing recognition of the ‘Steve Robinson Glass’ brand, we should take the opportunity of simplifying things and put all our products under one name. Now, all our products and designs can be seen on this one website, here for glass splashbacks, here for glass tiles and here for contemporary glass art.

So, as of 31st May 2010 we are putting dear old Rupert into retirement. He has served us well and will be fondly remembered.
