Hospital Commission – a Case Study
•Leave a CommentThis was a project which I felt particularly privileged to have had the opportunity to work on.
In Autumn of 2016 I was approached by Suzanne Davies, the Capital Adminstrative Officer for Hywel Dda University Health Board in Wales. Suzanne was overseeing the development of a new Haematology & Oncology Day Unit at Withybush Hospital in Pembrokeshire, and looking to commission one or more special artworks for the unit.
The outline brief was for the artwork to represent the coastline and countryside of Pembrokeshire, and ‘to bring the outside in’.
I thoroughly enjoyed the design process. I felt a deep emotional connection with the project and this helped to push me creatively.
I produced several design drawings to put forward for consideration, and the committee visited my Studio to see my proposals. They were unanimous in their preference for one of the designs in particular, which was an abstract view looking inland from the sea and incorporating the Preseli hills in the background, and I was given the go-ahead to proceed.
Upon completion, Suzanne Davies made the following statement:
“Hywel Dda University Health Board are delighted to announce the completion of an art project undertaken in collaboration with Steve Robinson Glass on a commissioned work for the new Pembrokeshire Haematology & Oncology Day Unit at Withybush Hospital. The project was funded via the kind donations of Withybush Hospital CDU Appeal.
From the initial phone call to the final installation, the professionalism of Steve’s work has been outstanding. The ability to listen and translate the brief from our nursing staff, fundraisers, design and stakeholder groups was exceptional and the creative flair that he brought to the project has left everyone totally delighted. Several design meetings took place where ideas were developed into sketch drawings followed by a visit to the studio to experiment with glass and colour.
We highly recommend Steve Robinson and congratulate him for the outstanding and unique installation that now adorns the walls of our new unit.”
